HP Compaq d530 308617-001 Power supply unit repair

HP Compaq d530 308617-001 Power supply unit HP Compaq d530s (SFF, small form factor) PCs use a proprietary ATX power supply. They are remarkably slim, and even include PFC (power factor correction) circuitry in an amazingly small package. These power supplies are quite efficient, which means they can be of a much lower wattage - 185 Watts in the case of the PS-5181-1HFE or HP-L185VA3P - and still be able to power a Pentium 4 system.

Quite often, these blow up with a bang and smoke upon connection to 240v mains power. The power supply will fail in one of two states:

Occasionally, the motherboard will sustain damage due to the PSU outputting excessive power during the brief instant of the boom.

Both of these failure states are caused by poor manufacturing: the glue used to hold the components in position whilst they are being soldered becomes conductive after long periods of being exposed to heat. Generally this happens after the PC has been in operation for an extended period of time, such as in school environments and corporate settings where the PC may be left on continuously for years at a time. The glue becomes hygroscopic, and when left unused for some time, it will absorb enough moisture to become conductive - causing an overload - and several critical components go short circuit as a result. The surge current is usually enough to trip a 16A circuit breaker.

Up to 30 percent of these PCs are affected after one to two years, especially if they have been moved, or unplugged for some period of time. Users have reported problems after moving the PCs out of an air-conditioned environment - moisture then soaks into the glue, exacerbating the problem.

If it were not for these PSU problems, the d530 SFF would have been an excellent and reliable corporate/business desktop PC. Note: The full sized d530 desktop tower PC uses a different PSU and is not affected by this problem. We also have information about the older sister of the d530, the Compaq Evo d510 SFF

Repair or replace?

HP will charge approximately $140 AUD for replacements, and depending on the age of the PC, this will not be economical, as the cost of the replacement PSU may be as high as one half of the value of a fully working secondhand replacement PC.

If you are interested in having the PSUs repaired for half the cost of what HP are charging for replacements, you can make an enquiry using the contact details on the home page.

Turnaround is usually a day or two per 4 computers. Discounts will be considered for bulk lots. If you are in metro Melbourne, You can send/deliver the entire PC to us - the PSUs are somewhat difficult to remove, and total removal is not necessary for repair. We can repair the PSUs whilst still attached to the rest of the system, so wiring looms are not disturbed or unravelled.

If you need instructions to remove the PSU, see How to remove a PDP124P PSU from an HP Compaq d530 SFF desktop PC.
Additional d530 info has some useful tips for getting a faulty system up and running in an emergency.

Preventative Maintenance

We also offer preventative maintenance to d530 SFF PCs, many of which have the problem waiting to happen. If you will be moving or purchasing large quantities of these PCs, we offer a preventative maintenance service to ensure that the power supplies do not succumb to the explosive failure upon application of mains power. Preventative maintenance only needs to be performed once on the power supplies which have not been serviced before.

Our rates are just a fraction of the cost of repair or replacement. Contact us for more information.

Any help you can give to someone in the USA who _is_ able to repair them himself (If I knew what needed to be fixed)? I've already replaced the caps in the PS (and the MB). Wondering if there are "standard" components the regulary fail. I have already scraped out the old "glue" from everywhere I could find it. Didn't see an obvious sign of component failure. BTW, failure mode is with 5V working and blinking lights..

Thanks in advance!

I just replaced mine per the guide, thanks so much. Only thing is now I get no power at all, do you know why the power supply won't power up? I hold the power button down and still nothing, maybe the new supply is bad too? Is there a way to just test the supply out, without it hooked up to the motherboard? Will it just power up without a load?

Thanks again, awesome guide

Hi
I got a few of these pieces of art, they are complete deads - here's the thing, none have any signs of burns or blow outs. All components physically look in good shape.

Flip the board over and see loads of glue, maybe micro level slight scaling but they havent contacted other terminals.

Any idea how i can go about fixing these?
how can I check components.

I'd rather fix these myself than my father in law, he seems to fix everything with sledge hammer (not the outcome im hoping for)

Any ideas please email me (with diagrams etc)
to wtebraiz@yahoo.com

Thanks Guys

What chance of a circuit diagram! I am in the UK and have all the equipment to do a repair and test.

Hi

I got a few D530/D510 308617-001 PSU's that havent blown up (except for one by twin large capacitors , it's the resistor). I need the diagram to investigate this nightmare.

One thing i noticed that soldering were at initial stage of corrosion/scaling.

The PSU's dont visibly appear to have blown/smoked etc but ehy just dont power up at all.

Any pointers as all components look ok and fuse seems ok.

Any help is welcome

Hi
just opened my psu (since it was completely dead), noticed at the back end of the unit (where kettle plug is shuved in), board has black scorch mark (blowout)

it's next to what seems like a rectangular resistor and where power cables are soldered into the board - all caps seem fine)

any ideas guys?

as for capacitors, avoid Nichicon, arcon etc, stick with panasonics, rubycon - not worth budgeting for.

thaniks

I have an HP dc5000 SFF, which uses the this same power supply. I found this website when looking for some reference on how to change the piece, turns out this page has great precise information which really helped me out a lot. I got a refurbished supply on Amazon and it's now installed and working perfectly. Thank you very much!

I have an HP Compaq D530 sff computer. The computer won't power on although there is power supply to the mother board. But the Hard Drive indicator lid keeps blinking red. I've confirmed that the POWER SUPPLY UNIT (PSU) is defective having tried another PSU from a working computer.
Does anyone know what might be wrong with the HP Compaq D530 sff's PSU? Does anyone know how to fix it??? Please, help!!! email me eron.ox007@ymail.com
Thank you in advance

I'm using this little thing as a sort of media center, and I'd like to replace the PSU fan with something less noisy (I already replaced the CPU fan). Does anyone have an idea of what would be the minimum air flow requirement? Thanks

Just fyi - I have had a couple of the d530 SFF's explode on me. Just today, I had the tower version to the same thing. *sigh*

I had a couple of these little SOB's explode on me, too. Alarming as hell. Sparks and fire and whatnot. Anyone know a good THIRD PARTY replacement part that's a little less "fire-hazardy?"

I have found 2 kinds of these PSUs: One which reads "Rev:83" and another which reads "Rev:85". Can I safely assume that by 1985 HP understood the problem so there is no use for preventive maintenance on the later?
